RATOON MANAGEMENT OF WINTER HARVESTED CROP IN NORTH INDIA
The sprouting of ratoon crop from winter harvested plant crop in November-December, particularly that of early maturing high sugar varieties is poor resulting in significantly less plant population and cane yield. To obtain a satisfactory ratoon crop under such conditions, the technology of trash burning, breaking soil compaction immediately after harvesting, spraying of stubbles with Emisan – an organo-mercurial fungicide and etheral- a growth regulator, soil application of lindane (Gamma BHC 20EC)/ Chloropyriphos/Regent/Confidor and application of small doses of N,P,K fertilizers followed by covering the stubbles with transparent polythene sheet have been found very useful in improving the sprouting and yield of ratoon crop. Polybag raised plantlets can also be used in spring for gap filling to make up for less plant population.
